ISSA 2015


The 2015 ISSA Congress was hosted by the University of Paris Descartes’ Sport Science Faculty and the Sorbonne Paris Cité community attracting close to 400 participants from more than 40 countries who presented over 320 papers and posters.

Professor Geneviève Rail from Concordia University delivered the keynote presentation, titled “The Wellbeing Imperative: On Bio-Others, Rescue Missions and Social Justice.”

A special panel on “Sport, Disability and Wellbeing” including José Antonio Solves Almela (Spain), Otto Schantz (Germany), Toni Bruce (New Zealand) and David Howe (UK) was chaired by Eric de Léséleur (France).

The 50th anniversary of both ISSA and the International Review for the Sociology of Sport (IRSS) was also celebrated during the Congress. Fabien Ohl (Switzerland) and Elizabeth Pike (ISSA President, UK) co-chaired another special panel on “The Trajectory and Challenges of the Sociology of Sport” as part the academic feature 50th anniversary celebrations. Participants in the panel were Kari Fasting (ISSA Past President, Norway), Steve Jackson (ISSA Past President, New Zealand), Tony Hwang (Taiwan) and Lawrence Wenner (IRSS Editor).

A 2015 double special issue of the IRSS entitled “50@50: Assessing the Trajectory and Challenges of the Sociology of Sport,” co-edited by ISSA President Elizabeth Pike, past ISSA President Steven Jackson, and IRSS Editor Lawrence Wenner, features 50 articles by 50 leading international scholars in a consideration of the state of the field to mark the 50th anniversary of ISSA and IRSS. The print edition of the IRSS 50th anniversary issue of approximately 300 pages published in June 2015 was available at the Congress.
